Design That Blends Into the Landscape Is NOT a Trend

Calling the integration of architecture and decor into the landscape a trend would be a mistake, because it has been a constant throughout history. From the Italian Renaissance gardens, whose structures always sought to enhance and frame the beauty of their surroundings, to today's biophilic design, which even the monolithic solidity of brutalism hasn't escaped, the search for an alliance with nature has always been there. It's, if anything, a matter of good taste, not a passing fad.

The moment you decide to bring a kitchen outdoors, it’s because what’s now called a trend is really the primary motivation: the desire to enjoy your surroundings while you cook. And, of course, to create that special social atmosphere, festive and relaxed, that’s only possible under the open sky. That’s why, in outdoor kitchens, finding designs that complement the harmony of the landscape instead of interrupting it shouldn’t be an option, but a must.

So why don’t all of them get it right? Because it isn’t easy. And that’s exactly why it has become Novara’s signature. To understand how hard it is, let’s take it step by step.

The design: To work with nature, it shouldn’t compete with it; that’s common sense. It needs to steer away from organic shapes and move toward clean lines and minimalist structures that don’t interfere too much. Floating countertops, built-in modules and open islands let the kitchen dissolve into its surroundings, achieving the visual integration that is key.

The function: without it, there’s no kitchen. Designing an outdoor space means facing challenges that don’t exist in indoor kitchens. Exposure to wind, humidity, heat or cold calls for a smart layout that protects the most delicate zones and ensures comfort in any season. Lighting plays a crucial role, too. It’s not just about installing light points, but about integrating discreet, strategically placed solutions that highlight volumes, prevent annoying shadows, make work easier and preserve the natural atmosphere of the space. Because an outdoor kitchen should invite you to use it.

The durability: and here we reach the biggest challenge. However beautiful nature may be, the elements erode relentlessly. That’s why, at this point, materials make the difference: natural stone, wood treated for outdoor use and weather-resistant metals like stainless steel ensure longevity and easy maintenance. But sometimes you have to go further… Q-XTREM® technology, developed by Novara, has revolutionized the industry by delivering high-performance surfaces that keep their flawless look even in extreme weather. We’ll tell you all about it, at length, in an upcoming blog post.

As you can see, the title of this article was cheeky and a bit of a setup, so forgive us. But we had to make clear that, for those of us who work in outdoor kitchens, blending design and landscape has never been a fad: it’s our reality, yesterday, today and always.
